Shalom House

Shalom House

A wooden house measuring 5 1/2 inches tall, 3 inches wide and 1 inch deep sporting a Hebrew prayer veneer. This is something that I created that has personal meaning to me. Any biblical or historical significance is purely coincidental. Shalom as you may know means hello, goodbye and peace. With everything going on in this country today I wanted something physical and symbolic to represent that I was a kind person and that my house was a safe place. I treat everyone with respect and kindness and I treasure the time between our hello and our goodbye and that you come and go in peace. I felt that by putting this in my home in clear view I am reminded of who I am and who I always want to be. The piece is in the shape of a house (from wood by the way that was used to build my art studio), the Shalom (explained above) and the Torah that teaches "tikkun olam" or how we make the world a better place.

Susan Detwiler

Location

Frisco, Texas
United States

About the Artist: Susan Detwiler

Susan has called herself an artist from the time she was a small child and discovered the joys of creating art, anything from drawing to making her own doll clothes. Her dresser top was always dotted with [temporary] works of art made from modeling clay. This led to exploring other forms of sculpture in her teens. In college Susan majored in fine art and science. During and after college she dabbled in local theater, creating sets, costumes, and props. In the 90s Susan became intrigued by polymer clay after seeing it demonstrated on "The Carol Duvall Show." She bought an Atlas pasta machine and began experimenting, not always successfully. Then she met some fellow polymer clay artists who pointed her in the right direction and hasn't looked back since. Susan's primary work in polymer clay involves sculpture. She especially enjoys creating and engineering interactive pieces that invite the viewer to pick them up for further exploration.
