Dayle Doroshow Workshops in Tallahassee

Saturday, February 18, 2012 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Every Day until February 20, 2012
Award winning mixed media artist Dayle Doroshow will be teaching three workshops at the LeMoyne Art Education Center in Tallahassee. The workshops include a variety media including polymer clay, collage, image transfer, hollow forms, fibers, bookmaking and jewelry design. The workshops are being hosted by the Tallahassee Polymer Clay Art Guild. Dayle Doroshow trained in traditional ceramics at Riverside Bell Tower Pottery program and the Columbia University Extension program in New York City and sold her pottery in Greenwich Village shops. She is the owner of design studio Zingaro, Stamp of Distinction in California. The Messengers and Storytellers workshop is on Saturday, February 18, 2011. Students will explore the mystery of three-dimensional figures, creating figures of polymer clay using a variety of surface design techniques and embellished with beads, fibers and personal treasures. Inspiration will come from earlier cultures and also from easy whimsical designs collaged from two-dimensional imagery. Doors and hiding places will be explored as part of the design. The Messengers can have secret places to hide a message or object, the Storytellers can house a small book and both can incorporate removable jewelry. On Sunday, February 19, Rattle Beads and Pendants workshop includes a survey of ancient cultures as inspiration for sound-making beads and pendants. There will be several ways for creating the rattles along with easy variations. Techniques for surface designs will be many and varied and include millefiori applique, embossing and texture. Carved and sculptural elements will adorn the rattles and also serve as bead caps. The final workshop, The Unfolding Pyramid, will take place on Monday, February 20, 2011. Explore the mysteries of ancient civilizations as students peek through windows, unlock and walk through doors into the world of sculptural books. Using polymer clay, beautiful papers, and other elements, students will create freestanding, three-dimensional ”books that are sculptures” or visa versa. Personal imagery, found objects and other mixed media will be combined with polymer clay to create a pyramid structure that unfolds to reveal a hidden surprise. Polymer clay techniques include transferring photocopy imagery, carving and antiquing, making and using three dimensional clay pieces. Each workshop costs $125, with multi-day discounts available. Carol Simmons: Art Nouveau Leaves with a new Mokume Gane

Saturday, March 31, 2012 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
This event does not repeat
We will stack thin layers of different colors of “metallic” Premo clay to form a block (or billet) which we will “distort” with impression stamps we will make ourselves. The block will be sliced with a special slicer to produce gorgeous, silk-like paper-thin sheets of patterned clay. These unique patterned sheets drape like fabric and can be used to cover or embellish objects such as beads, pendants, and decorative items. In class you will have the option of making a leaf brooch or a pendant. The item will be fired, then lightly sanded and hand buffed to accentuate the pattern. If time permits, you will have the option of machine-buffing your creation to a brilliant, glass-like shine. You will return home with additional patterned sheets to experiment with on your own.
