Workshop with Laurie Mika
Mixed Media Mosaic Icons
August 14 -15, 2010
Sponsored by: Houston Polymer Clay Guild
Please join us for an intensive, technique driven workshop creating mixed media mosaics using polymer clay. In creating our “Icons”, students will learn a variety of overlapping techniques that include: mosaic design, painting, rubber stamping, collage, embossing, beading, and embedding just about anything into polymer clay. The result will be a personal and beautiful icon that can be hung on the wall or displayed on a plate stand. Techniques learned in this class can also be used to make jewelry.
This will be a hands-on workshop where students will get the experience of making and baking their own tiles and component parts. No previous clay experience is required, so come join the fun!

The Houston Polymer Clay Guild is excited to announce that we will host much sought after artist, Ronna Sarvas Weltman on March 26-27, 2011. We are fortunate to have her and urge those of you who can, to attend our 2-day workshop.
Take your polymer clay experience to the next level by combining wire and an organic look into your polymer clay jewelry and mixed media projects.
On the first day, we will explore many polymer clay techniques that can achieve the organic look that defines Ronna Sarvas Weltman work. Techniques will include marbling, texturing, carving, and techniques for increasing comfort and skill with color and pagination of polymer clay.
On the second day of the workshop students will explore more advanced skills, including the practical and aesthetic process of designing successful necklaces, bracelets, brooches, rings and earrings that combine polymer clay and wire. Students will learn how to make their own unique wire clasps and closures. Although the focus in this workshop will be on the creative process, students will have ample opportunities to make finished pieces if they wish.
This workshop is suitable for students with intermediate experience in polymer clay and for students who are beginners to wire work.
Go to Ronna’s website for examples of Ronna’s artistic vision and techniques www.ronnasarvasweltman.com

A PERFECT UNION
When Wire Meets Clay
This four-day intensive workshop employs wire-working and polymer clay form building techniques to create innovative small-scale sculptural forms in jewelry. First we will fabricate wire frame armatures and then complete basket forms with a tinkered wire-wrapping technique. Next, we will create original polymer clay forms through staged clay layering and multi-cycle curing to complete pieces. Finally, we’ll explore finishing techniques with an emphasis on an array of surface ornamentation options. This is a technique workshop, not a project class; therefore all students should have a basic working knowledge of polymer clay.

Carol Simmons will lead a two-day workshop on her 'Intricate Cane Veneers" technique; heavy in color theory and can construction--you know hers are the best!--this workshop is a rare opportunity to attend a master class in a shorter venue than she normally holds.

Award winning polymer clay artist Carol Simmons will be teaming up with Sheri L. Williamson, hummingbird specialist and birder extraordinaire, to offer a 6-day workshop combining polymer clay and birding outside of Bisbee, AZ next spring. Carol will teach Intricate Kaleidoscope Cane Veneers and Sheri (author of The Peterson Guide to Hummingbirds) will lead short birding tours each day. Learn how to bring out the richness of color in polymer clay by washing thin sheets over a white base.
Start by making a color collage to inspire your palette for the workshop and then practice
instinctively mixing colors using the Maggio Mixing Map as a guide.
After mixing your project colors, Maggie will demonstrate the
basic versions of her Watercolor Technique and show you how to make a sampler set of
simple flat beads that will allow you to play with color, shape and visual texture.
After making and baking your own beautiful collection of flat color-washed beads in many
shapes and sizes you will select five beads to combine into a fun reversible pendant which
we will finish in class using rubber cording. You can then take the rest of your beads home
to put together into jewelry of your own design.
Tuition: $75 (or $125 for 2 classes) & % $300 airfare
Kit Fee : $15 kit fee includes colored clay, handouts, stringing materials and group supplies.
Materials to Bring: Premo Polymer Clay, minimum of 6 oz (195 g) of dark scrap or Black

In this fast-paced workshop you will learn how to mix customized
colors inspired by your favorite landscape, explore what nature can
teach us about adding depth to our work, practice troubleshooting
to get gorgeous color combinations, and collage a mini landscape
brooch to take home.
Start by instinctively mixing colors to match your landscape using the Maggio Mixing Map
as a guide. Once you have the colors you need, Maggie will demonstrate her advanced
Watercolor techniques for creating color-washed sheets to mimic Sky, Mountains, Trees,
Fields and Water. Have fun exploring new ways to combine a variety of standard polymer
techniques with the Watercolor technique as you make your personal collection of sheets.
Play with tearing and laying out your sheets until you have an abstract collage that feels
inspired by your landscape and then mount your collage in a 2” (50 mm) brass frame
without using glue.
