Go Organic

Monday, July 11, 2011 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
This event does not repeat
Ronna is teaching two different classes at the IPCA retreat pre-classes. She is teaching Pod Necklace and Go Organic with Polymer Clay . She was asked a few questions about the classes and here is what she had to say…. Pod Necklace Why did you choose to teach this class? Students get to learn so many techniques when they learn these simple pods, and they also get an opportunity to make a project that they will (probably) finish in class. Plus, of course, they’re fun to wear — as pendants, as brooches, reduced into tiny earrings … and more. What do you expect the students to get from this class? Students will learn about texture and color, about how to combine texture and color, how to work in multiple layers, design considerations around “physics” as well as the aesthetics. They will also get inspiration in the whole idea-to-design-to-construction process. If you could share one thing about your journey as an artist what would it be? Every mistake and misshapen piece of yuck that you design is part of the process of achieving art. Each step informs the next in your journey. For clay newcomers, what would be your best advice? Play around! Polymer clay is so affordable, you can give yourself freedom to experiment and goof around. Go Organic with Polymer Clay Why did you choose to teach this class? I love organic jewelry! The only thing more fun than making it is teaching others how to do it too. What do you expect the students to get from this class? I’ve found that students are often hungry to make the leap from following instructions for specific projects to finding their own voice in polymer clay, but they don’t have the confidence to move forward on their own. By combining lots of instruction in specific techniques with guidance about how to then take those techniques to new places, students are able to empowered and liberated. Bettina is a German graphic designer who has also worked as a jewelry designer and polymer clay artist since 2003. She is a co-founder of the German polymer clay group Polyclaykunst.de and works as executive director and spokesperson for international liaisons for the group. Bettina  was asked a few questions about this class and here is what she had to say…. Hinged Bracelet Why did you choose to teach this class? There are many beginner’s and intermediate level classes out there, most of them technique oriented. There is not much really new left to develop or teach – technique-wise, that is. So I wanted to develop a really advanced project class for some time now. I learned that many students prefer project classes over techniques because they go home with a finished piece of jewelry, which they can proudly wear and show off;) Knowing that bracelets are very en vogue these days, this class seemed to be a perfect fit. What do you expect the students to get from this class? I’m thinking that this class will give my students a hint of how to work as exact and neatly as possible to achieve a perfectly shaped and finished piece of jewelry. This elaborate kind of bracelet will only work and stand out if it’s built with accurateness. If you could share one thing about your journey as an artist what would it be? I’m really thankful for the support and encouragement the PC community gave me from the first day I worked with polymer clay. Without this ongoing support I’d probably never have taken the leap into being a polymer artist and especially into teaching. Teaching is very rewarding for me – nothing compares to the thankfulness of happy and satisfied students:) For clay newcomers, what would be your best advice? Keep your eyes wide open. Inspiration is everywhere. And of course: Try everything, check out techniques, experiment with the medium, take classes (live, online or from books/DVDs) and practice as much as you can to find your voice with this fabulous art medium. Lindly Haunani Indianapolis Nov 12-13

Saturday, November 12, 2011
Every 2 Days until November 14, 2011
The Indiana Polymer Clay Guild is sponsoring Lindly Haunani's "Telling Your Color Story" workshop, November 12-13, 2011.  And, because everyone needs a bargain this 2-day workshop is only$175 for Early Bird Registration by August 15.  BUT, it's still a good bargain at $200 after August 15th!! Join Lindly for a two day exploration inspired by YOUR favorite color. In this very personalized workshop you will learn how to mix different variations of your favorite color while capturing the exact recipes so you can duplicate your mixes. Several strategies for investigating great color combinations based on your color will be presented through a series of hands on exercises. Based on what you have learned about your favorite color, you will be guided to choose and mix a dark and light designed to enhance that color. You will then make a series of color coordinated canes that will be used to make a series of wearable color samples = your choice, brooches or a sample bead bracelet. Lindly’s version of a Damascus Ladder cane - a simple technique that will provide the basis for you to create harmonious color combinations that tell your color stories.  The real learning is all about color. See how the three properties of color: value, hue and saturation dazzle and change when proportion, juxtaposition and surface are consciously adjusted. Ask questions, be ready to laugh and increase your color confidence. Although this workshop uses polymer clay as its media – it is perfect for anyone wanting to learn and explore color.  Beaders and quilters can apply these principles to they projects. While the workshop is great for all levels, we request no children under the age of 16. Checks and credit cards won't be processed until September 15, 20ll.  After registration you will receive workshop times, location information and maps, a complete list of necessary supplies, plus local hotel listings.  If you have any questions please email This email address is being protected from spambots.
